All of these videos are delightful, fun, and maybe even risky or subversive, but don't they also show how CI dancers are 'out of touch' with their social environment? A plane is a really small space that we share. My body would not feel more free, but more constrained, more contracted, if I experienced this dance. I would be pulling my hands and feet closer to my body, trying to get out of the way and take up even less space. Notice How many people do not watch, do not want to connect, do not want to touch - not only in this video but in What If and others. What does it mean to dance, not only with our physical bodies but with our social and political bodies? When are we taking up (conquering, colonizing) common space and when are we collaborating, sharing, enlivening, reframing our shared spaces? Are people who don't dance CI less happy, less free, less afraid, less sensitive? Not in my experience. I will be at the fest in July and I look forward to discussing these ideas about freedom and political bodies, about public spaces, and creating new realities. Keith.
